During my Divascape to Houston, I had the opportunity to visit family, eat good food, and of course shop. The people were friendly and I enjoyed the scenery albeit flat, no mountains nor hills in sight but a lot of land.

Houston is actually the fourth largest city in the United States and the largest city in the state of Texas. The city was incorporated on June 5, 1837 and named after the former general Sam Houston. According to the 2008 U.S. Census Bureau, there are 2.2 million people who live in this great city.

Our first stop was Luby’s Cafeteria. I used to frequent this eatery several times during my summer visits to Houston as a kid. It’s cheap and pretty good considering it’s a cafeteria. I’m not a cafeteria type, however, Luby’s passed. The good thing about Houston is that there are A LOT of places to eat and shop.

We also had the pleasure of going to dinner at Willie G’s Seafood & Steaks. From the wine to entrée, it was a delicious occasion. We feasted on salmon, shrimp, tilapia, bisque, etc. Willie G’s is also located in Galveston on the Gulf of Mexico and Denver.

For shopping, there is The Galleria near downtown Houston with stores that divas love: Gucci, Neiman, Tiffany & Co., Valentino, etc.; I could go on and on. We did a drive by as I was with the hubby and family and when I shop, I shop alone. However, we did make our way to Houston Premium Outlets with over 120 stores. From Coach to Kate Spade, there was a plethora of great finds. I didn’t get a chance to purchase some “good ole cowgirl boots” however I am looking forward to this the next time.

And as always, I try to embrace the arts and culture when visiting a city. We had the opportunity to see Christmas with Great Aunt at The Ensemble Theatre. Houston is an art centered city as I remember seeing the Nutcracker there as a young diva.

The Space Center was another stop as we learned about all things space. This is a great place to visit with the kids, as they will learn about Apollo 13, man on the moon, our solar system, moon rocks and the mystery of space. The best feature is the NASA tram tour where visitors learn how the astronauts train for their missions.

I truly had a wonderful time with family. We ate, played card and board games, shopped, and celebrated the holidays Texas style; everything in Texas is done up BIG!

Smooches,

Cali and I have completed our first semester as professors and are looking forward to spring semester. With the holidays, School Dayz is taking a winter break along with our universities and students, but we will continue to post in other categories. Don’t think that you cannot still end up on Academic Probation! So now, we will share.

On the first day of classes, I strolled on campus in a new dress, perfect hair, Gucci shades, carrying my Louis Vuitton briefcase ready to conquer academia! I walked into the classroom and a six-foot female student gave me the side eye and said “You bout to teach something in here?” Astounded, I answered “Excuse me, yes I am about to teach a class. This is the school of communications.” I enunciated every word perfectly to combat this bad English attack. She rolled her eyes, grumbled and walked out of the room. I was relieved that she wasn’t in my class and was only passing through. She completely rattled me. All of my moxie disappeared instantly.

I stumbled through that first class and the first week, losing my voice by the end of it. By week three I had regained my bearings, my voice, and hit my stride. Although there were still several bumps along the road to the end of semester, like me bringing the wrong attendance sheet to class or my battles with the projector, I’ll give myself a B+.

My semester ended with hugs from my students, chocolates, complaints about grades and relief from me. Oh and that core shaking student, is nothing like that first impression. She’s actually delightful and a very talented articulate producer.

Air Kisses,

Professor Diva Mac

________

My first day was somewhat similar minus the shades since I teach at night. However, I do wear shades at night (but not in class) to keep my youthful look-lol! I walked into my first class and immediately knew this was the place for me. The students were attentive and looked me up and down as if to say, “she’s teaching this class?” as my age probably startled them. I guess they were looking for the older “nutty professor” but not the case here.

I remember one of my students saying, “Your necklace is pretty; your birthday is in August?” I responded a quick and little nervous “Yes, and thank you.” As the semester progressed, I quickly learned the “personalities” of each class: the first class was my strongest and enjoyed learning; the second class were my comedians; and the third class was the serious class and it took a little more to make them laugh or smile. I learned several lessons along the way, with the most important lesson being: I was also a student. They taught me about character and humility.

As Professor Mac indicated, the semester ended with gifts, hugs, complaints about grades, and remarks about how they overcame public speaking by taking my class. All in all, like Professor Mac proclaimed and President Obama recently indicated for himself, I too, give myself a B+. There is always room for improvement and the journey has only just begun.

Smooches,

My earliest memories of my Aunt Anne are of her emerging from the car after a 12-hour trip from New York to South Carolina and still looking radiant. She always traveled chic, no sweats allowed. When she arrived in Washington, D.C. for my graduate school graduation this past spring those memories came to mind. More than 20 years later she was still the chicest traveler.

Anne traded South Carolina for NYC in 1968. She dove into city life; always looking fabulous, attending Broadway shows, and dining at hot restaurants. She was the most glamorous person I’d ever seen. There were many suitors that tried to “Put a ring on it” but she was the original “Miss Independent” and preferred holidaying in the Caribbean to domesticity.

Although she was living the glamorous life she loved visiting her family in South Carolina and hosting them in New York. Her siblings provided her with an army of nieces and nephews that she doted on. When I was little, I’d help her unpack when she came to visit. I loved her clothing’s fabric, especially the furs! I’d ask why there was an LV on her brown luggage when her initials were AW. It was diva training!

During my trips to New York she introduced me to her city. When I was interning in New York every Sunday she gave me subway tokens, made me dinner, and styled my hair into a chignon or French twist that withstood the summer heat. Her closet was my “Bag, Borrow or Steal.” I borrowed Louis and Gucci. Years later I was so proud to introduce Anne and my mom (her older sister) to my then city of Washington. We shopped, saw a play, and dined at Zola and B. Smith’s.

Anne retired at the age of 52 and returned to South Carolina. She reconnected with old friends, learned to drive, and bought her first car: a Mercedes. If I had become really busy and didn’t call her, soon I’d receive a voice mail message laced with love and encouragement. I saved her messages and listened to them several times.

When I returned to South Carolina this summer we were both excited that we could now spend more time together. She quickly corrected anyone that called me a teacher and said “she’s a professor.” All year she had been experiencing mysterious health problems. She endured test after test with style and grace and in heels. She was a woman of faith and was confident that she would beat this mystery illness. Two weeks ago she was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease and the prognosis was bleak. Anne made all the decisions about her treatment although she could only communicate through written notes now. On Monday night she returned to her home instead of going to a hospice facility. Her siblings rallied around and prepared to care for her. Tuesday morning she made her transition.

I’m devastated. We wanted to go to California together, holiday shop at the Saks outlet, and one day I’d have a daughter that she would be a great aunt to. At 62, my original diva exited too soon.
