By wearing wedges I can navigate the rocks, and climb the hill in style. Parking on my campus is limited and unpredictable. The largest faculty lot is a gravel pit at the bottom of a hill. I’m lucky to get a spot there if I synchronize my arrival perfectly. It’s difficult to walk on gravel, especially in heels. This lot is called the “sprain your ankle lot.” Many days I end up in a miscellaneous lot even further from the main campus. Wedges eliminate the need for carrying two pairs of shoes, wearing flip flops, and then changing into my heels once I reach my office.

My discovery of functional footwear was not intentional. I’ve always found wedges to be very cute and comfortable. I bought a black peep toe pair and a bronze pair of wedge heeled sandals that I wore a lot during summer break. I continued rocking them once I returned to campus along with my favorite black Via Spiga, sling back, peep toe, patent pair and the flower print Franco Sarto’s that I have had for years. The computer lab where I teach most of my classes finally has a working podium and projector. Students knew I was coming when they heard my heels and the wheels on the projection cart coming down the hall. Now I stand at the podium throughout class in comfort and style in my wedges, without dragging around the squeaky cart.

By no means have I given up my heels ( I was wearing stilettos today) and although my wedges are functional they are tall!

The 4th of July has passed and next will be Christmas–at least that’s what it feels like. Once the summer comes to an end, we’re “dashing through the snow” to buy holiday gifts. A warm summer night is far off in the distance somewhere laughing as we shiver

Earlier this week, I posted a thought on my personal Facebook page about the 4th of July holiday meaning midsummer has arrived; where does the time go? This has given me the blues. Bah -humbug—wait, wrong season.

This is how I came to think about the color blue. I like it but I really don’t wear it often unless I am wearing a pair of jeans. Most often, for me, it’s worn around Independence Day along with some tops here and there. Also, true blue is a conservative color for the most part; we all have that blue suit in the back of our closet that we wore on our very first interview after college–BOR-RING! Thankfully we have come a long way and there are obviously various hues.

collegefashion.net

But from blue shoes, to accessories, to lipstick–yes blue lipstick—it doesn’t really rock my boat. What about yours? While I do like colors, call me colorblind on this one as I just haven’t really found the right hue of a true blue. Hopefully the “blues” won’t get the best of me and I can find a something to get me through.

Smooches,

Professor Diva Cali

P.S. Does anyone else have the “blues” about blue? Leave your comments here.

As Professor Mac and myself have been posting to our Facebook and Twitter pages, winter break has been lovely. No class, no students to worry about, and no papers or speeches to grade. Well, it’s come to an end and school starts Monday . . . huh . . . But being the divas that we are, they’ll be some changes. To start off, the other diva will be in San Juan, Puerto Rico the first week of class for a school related seminar (not sure how she managed that one), as I drudge through what might be a rain/snow mix on Monday. As she sips on a drink with an umbrella, I’ll be thinking about some hot cocoa.

The plan for this year is to “spruce it up.” We are going into our second year of teaching, and for me, teaching the same subject semester after semester has become mundane. My past students should consider themselves lucky because there will be more speeches and in-class activities–what fun for me and my students–tee hee!

But one thought that has crossed my mind in heading back to campus is fashion; not only what will I wear but how will I wear it? I wish I could do a total REVAMP of my entire closet but that will come later down the line. I have noticed some pieces that fit me well and they will definitely be worn on campus. Like we have always said, we are no school marms and shoes with a heel are a must. These following items are to my liking.

cheapcashmere.com

Sweaters/Wraps: These are comfortable, easy to get in and out, and keep you warm during the winter months. I prefer something with a little character like a zipper, button, or belt to enhance the look.

shoptstyle.com

Pants: My fav is a slimming waist/hips with a wide leg. I am also a fan of leather pants that fit nicely–not to tight to polish your look. Please no tight pants. Also, something with an embellishment–i.e. buttons, a belt, etc, adds a little flare.

shopstyle.com

Boots: They have played a major role in my life when it comes to my shoes. I love boots with a cute skirt and some fierce tights. I am really liking the ankle boots this year too. It’s just very chic. Also, knee boots are classic and give coverage when it gets down right cold. Don’t try to be cute in ankle boots when it’s 20 degrees outside unless you have a the right coat for coverage.

shopstyle.com

Scarves/Accessories: I really can’t say enough about scarves because I wear one practically every day. It takes your outfit from frumpy to fabulous. And the key for me is color and different textures. I love scarves and accessories–but don’t overdo it. Like Coco Chanel says, take one item off before you leave the house. One signature piece is enough.

As we prepare to head back to campus, we’ll continue to keep you posted on the ups and downs and any “shinanigans.”

Smooches,
The event was also produced by the uber stylish Shameeka Ayers aka The Broke Socialite, so it’s no surprise that the event contained a sea of fashionistas. Between sessions and sometimes during I found myself being taken in by the style of my fellow bloggers. At this moment, I decided to write about the look of lavish, the unconference for the lifestyle social networker that Professor Cali and I attended!

It was pure eye candy for me coming off of a week of final exams when everyone gets a bit scruffy from late nights of studying and grading. I wasn’t the only attendee that took notice. There were many tweets about the fashionable crowd.

@Blueprint4Style Lavish! has brought together some of those fabulous and haute group of bloggers; everyone should be honored & elated to attend!!

I really began to take notice during Andrea Smoak’s presentation on branding. In the standing room only session, I was standing and could really survey the room. Styles in the room ranged from classic, edgy, upper east side prep, trendy to bohemian. The black and white skirt that Kristina Bailey wore to the cocktail party at Pieces (store with the most original furniture ever) ruled the night. The recurring style theme of the weekend was the statement necklace. I couldn’t possibly photograph them all and still network and take notes!

I’ve included photos here of a few of my favorite looks. Checkout the full PDD lavish! album on our Facebook page.

As I was looking at a football game last week and talking with my dear cousin, it dawned on me that it was breast cancer awareness month; I had somewhat missed the boat. In a hurry, I took my pink watch to the shop to get the battery fixed just to have the band break. So now, the hunt is on for a pink watch band.

But the question that crossed my mind was why pink? The color itself has so many connotations associated with it. From a baby girl to the color of happiness . . . pink, pink, pink. Honestly, at first it really wasn’t my color. But now, I like it. From frosted pink lipstick, to pink nails, to a pink blinged-out case for my blackberry—yes, I know—the color has become a part of my life. It’s feminine, supports the awareness of a great cause, and by the way, looks great with chocolate brown.

So in my quest to find a cute pink watch band, I started to research all things pink–cute, rare, and interesting to say the least. I’d like to give a shout-out to my diva friend Masika who LOVES pink and named her foundation P.I.N.K. Check out the website.

In the Eyes–yes, pink contact lenses. At least now you won’t have to wear rose colored glasses–lol. Who knew such an item existed. Seriously? I didn’t believe it when I saw it with my own brown eyes. They’ll cost you about $30 and there are more colors to pick from. Also, several designs. Huhh?

Hot Stepper–who else but Betsey Johnson. These boots are around $260 but you will be struttin’ like the Pink Panther’s wife. All I can say is if you can pair these with an outfit, you know how to bring it diva.

Mama Said Knock You Out–and you’ll be adorable in these fuzzy boxing gloves. They are available online at the Pink Superstore along with other items. From pink tool belts to a water nozzle, it’s all there. Now if you want to duke it out with your honey, this is a cute way to do so.

The Pink Ribbon collection includes the Evelyn Lauder Lip Design Collection ($25), the Jeweled Pink Ribbon Pin ($12.50), and Elizabeth Hurley Lip Design Collection ($25). Shop ‘til your pink heart is content.

Hopefully you will go out and purchase something pink in support of breast cancer awareness month. If not, paint your nails pink or wear some hue of pink lipstick. According to the most recent statistics 191,410 women were diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,820 women died from breast cancer in 2006.†

Let’s all take a stand by wearing/purchasing something pink albeit cute, rare, or interesting.

At first thought when you think of shoes, what comes to mind? Is it your Manolo Blahniks, Jimmy Choos, Ferragamos, or those lovely shoes from Bergdorf Goodman? Well, one diva doing a good thing with her shoes, not only thinks of herself but of others.

Sylvia Webb, founder and president of 40 Girls and Some Shoes, has organized shoe drives and fundraisers for the past three years to simply help those who need take the first step. And this step is out of homelessness and into transition with a pair of new or gently worn shoes. This non-profit’s basic principle: to be an agent for transformative change in the lives of those who are experiencing homelessness. Each year 3.5 million Americans experience homelessness and 23% of these individuals are children (source: National Coalition for the Homeless). Sylvia and this wonderful non-profit have managed through a vast network of partnerships and associations to provide 4,000 pairs of free shoes to these underserved groups since its inception.

Professor Diva Diaries had the opportunity to catch up with Sylvia as she was in full throttle of planning her next shoe fundraiser. As she prepares for this event taking place this weekend in Atlanta, we wanted to capture her as the diva that she is–giving back to her community, realizing the importance of this, and just doing good and looking good too.

What is your definition of a diva?
A woman who isn’t afraid to be herself; she is confident and understands her purpose and her gifts. A woman who doesn’t need stilettos to stand tall; she stands tall in all the SHOES she wears.

Name a diva that you identify with.
All women and women who stood up for women’s rights; the right to be free, the right to choose what happens to their bodies, the right for equal work and equal pay, and the right to choose who they love (Black, white, brown or other).

What is your latest diva purchase?

A black Tadashi Shoji dress and a great pair of shoes from Italy

What is the diva item you can’t live without?
My Mac Currant Lip Liner and Mac gives back you know?

As Sylvia stated, “shoes do not educate, nor do they guarantee a home or employment, but they can provide an increase in esteem and protect the “soles” of those looking to take what may be that first all important step in getting to the other side of their lives.”

So if you can donate divas, please do. Besides, donating a pair of shoes means room for more shoes in your closet!

Smooches,

As the summer sizzles and we all think twice about the outdoor shopping malls, it has been brought to my attention that swimwear is creaping up everywhere. And when I say creaping up, I litterally mean creaping up on the anatomy! So, please don’t fall victim to being on academic probation while on the beach or at the pool.

With the 4th of July last weekend, pools, beaches, lakes, and anywhere with water were bumrushed by the bikini or swimsuit. I must admit, I did attempt a bikini while vacationing this spring in the Bahamas and I am here to say that it was a BAD, BAD idea. Thankfully, now I am back to the basic, but cute, swimsuit. I realize that gravity has won (for now) and that I will work my way back into that cute pink bikini; but a black one piece works just fine for now.

There are a couple of personal rules that I follow for wearing a bikini that come to mind. I had a great conversation with my cousin about this over the weekend. Now, I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, so think of this as an intervention from a dear friend. Ok?

1. Don’t wear a bikini that is too small. Really? If you’re a size 12 (which is perfectly fine), don’t try to fit into a size six.

2. Less is NOT always more. Cover yourself appropriately with the right type of fabric because we all don’t want to see your “goods.” See through is not for everyone.

3. When in doubt, throw it out. If you have to talk yourself into wearing it, maybe you shouldn’t wear it all. Save yourself while your ahead.

4. If you ask your spouse, significant other, or friend “how do I look?” and they give you a blank stare, don’t get upset. Just change into a one-piece. I’ve been there before.

5. Last, if you wore a bikini at 23 and you’re now 33, things may not look the same and other people will notice too. Don’t worry, just readjust from a bikini to a tankini. You’ll still look good.

Enjoy the water and waves and remember no matter what size, you can still look good but just make the right decision before hitting the water.

Smooches,

So, the divas were on break last week. With the semester in full throttle, we were busy, busy, busy. But time to catch up and sip on some peppermint tea.

Spring is around the corner and I absolutely love this time of year. Cute sundresses, sandals, capri pants and shades. Speaking of shades, my favs are Dior, Fendi, and Mr. Cavalli. The plan is to purchase a pair of each(if I can get away with it!) before summer officially starts. I need to get my shades, gear, and body in shape. Yes, the body needs to be reconditioned.

But what does it really mean to get in shape? Is it exercising, dieting, starvation, or diet pills? According to a study, on any given day, almost half the women in the United States are on a diet (source: www.inch-aweigh.com). From Dexatrim (that’s old school), SlimQuick, Fen Phen, and all the others, the way we look continues to play a role in how good we feel about ourselves at any cost; sometimes even death unfortunatley.

Source: Jennifer Chernoff

I have tried Weight Watchers, which was really successful and was recently doing P90X . I will say that P90X did have me feeling great on the inside and outside. However, I have somewhat fell off the bandwagon and need to hop back on.

Ideally it’s about how you feel on the inside and how healthy you are. Making improvements to our health everyday is key. The beauty of it all is that health is what matters most and divas come in various sizes and shapes. From a size 4 to 24, we still look good.

Divas are always high-fashioned mommas whether small, medium or curvy. Plus sized models are considered a size 14. Hmmm. But the stores that I love carry all sizes because Lord knows I go up and down in my dress size.

Torrid: I came across this online. They have cute and trendy items for our full figured divas. From shoes to accessories and intimate apparel, they have a good selection. And while you are there, check out the DivaStyle member benefits. I love that name!

Source: Peter Duhon

New York & Company: Love this place and great work clothes, weekend wear, and night out on the town gear. They also tend to have great sales and my closet appreciates this. Great thing is that the clothes go from petite to size 18.

White House Black Market: If you are looking to diva-fy it a little more, I love WHBM. It’s elegant and chic all in the same breath. And when they decide to have a sale, they REALLY have a sale. Sizes are from 0-16. They even carry a size OO. Who knew that even existed?

Kiyonna: Visit here if you are looking for everyday work or weekend errand wear. It’s simple but flattering for women who want to be comfortable. If you are entertaining, have a special event, or a date with that special someone, you can go glam. This is a place with ”Sophisticated Style, Size 10 +.”

Divas, whatever your style, look good in it. No matter you’re size, you are BEAUTIFUL!

Smooches,

So divanaires, we are into the full holiday season. Christmas and New Year’s are only a beat away and we must get our gear to be dazzling under the mistletoe!

I love the holidays and my ensembles usually include a sweater, skinny jeans, and a cocktail. . . . and NOT a Christmas sweater (thanks Professor Mac!). My style is more along the lines of chic found most likely at a boutique.

NV-U Boutique is a place that I frequent for a cute find. Owner, Nikki Vigilance, (thus NV) is a stylish diva that opened the boutique about two years ago. She has a true passion for fashion and continues to build her business. As always, divas are busy but we were able to catch up with Nikki and get some holiday fashion advice.

Source: NV-U Boutique

Q: What are some of the trends this holiday season?

A: This holiday season we are seeing sequenced and studded items. From jackets to dresses to sweaters and tops, studs and sequence are key. The items are also very festive and chic.

Q: What do you suggest for divas on a budget that still want to “spruce” it up for the holidays?

A: You could pair leggings or a long sleeve tee with something that is studded or sequenced. Also, flat boots are stylish and you can get them at relatively inexpensive prices. Make sure you try them on and get a style that truly fits you.

Q: What is a signature piece that every diva should have for the holidays?

A: A short jacket that hits you right at the waist. Military jackets are also in style this season and come in an array of colors and designs.

Q: What type of clothing/accessory compliments all body types?

A: We all come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. However, you can always count on a nice tunic and belt which can be worn together or separately. The good thing is that they both compliment all body types.

Source: Bauble Boutik

So back to me; accessories are always great. I AM ALL ABOUT ACCESSORIES. My jewelry drawer is beginning to look just like my mother’s, so I got it honestly. Some of my favorite pieces are from Bauble Boutik. I am also in love with the diamond and peridot necklace I received from the hubby last year for Christmas. Don’t we all LOVE diamonds?

So hopefully you are ready for the holidays. Kudos to Nikki for sharing and keeping me fashionably fit as I venture to her store for an impulse buy. A diva defines fashion. Keep it chic ladies and happy holiday shopping!

Smooches,

Every diva carries the essence of a pearl: classic and timeless. Based upon a Stiletto Study, pearls come in all shapes, sizes, and a variation of colors–just like a true woman!

A lady of elegance, our very own First Lady Michelle Obama has brought the pearl back in fashion. Whether she is strutting her stuff (like a true diva) along the White House lawn or making an appearance among dignitaries, her pearls of power make a statement. And let us not forget Jackie O., Audrey Hepburn and other divas who have paved the way.

Also, it goes without saying, that we must mention Mr. Mikimoto. Mikimoto pearls are stunning as they have graced the necks of many. His invention lead to the success of a cultured pearl, Mikimoto wanted to “adorn the necks of all the women of the world with pearls.”

So the next time, you pick up those Versace shades and make that impulse buy (you know how we are), think of the true essence of a diva and buy a set of beautiful pearls!

Smooches,
