Putting the “D” Back in Diva: Women’s History Month
Women’s History Month actually started off as Women’s History Week in 1978 in the month of March. In 1987, true divas shined through and petitioned Congress to expand the celebration to the entire month of March. This year is the 30th anniversary with the theme being Writing Women Back into History.
In celebration of all women and their history, I wanted to feature some of my favorites.
She’s the top woman of our country who has whipped the White House like no other and serves as our First Lady, Mrs. Michelle Obama. She is beautiful, loves her husband and kids, and takes no shame in wearing sleeveless tops, even in winter. The First Lady is a Princeton University and Harvard Law School grad. Can any other First Lady top that? I rest my case.
Now I must say that my girl Ms. Sheryl Crow took me through the end of the 90’s into 2K. She has overcome breast cancer, a break up, and is back on top. Plus not to mention she looks great at 47 with a 2 year-old son. Smokin’!
I would be remissed if I didn’t talk about Ms. Madame C.J. Walker. Officially Sarah Breedlove McWilliams Walker, she literally revolutionized the hair care and cosmetic industry for African-American Women.
What else could you ask for in a mother? She was an advocate for the poor and a true humanitarian. Mother Teresa has set the stage for us on how we should live our lives. Though she was criticized by some, she also helped thousands upon thousands through her missionary efforts.
If you are interested in OWNing your network, talk to Ms. Oprah Winfrey. She is a true diva and millions of women tune into her everyday as she brings billions into her bank account. It is also apparent that she believes in “it is better to give than to receive,” as this is why she is truly blessed.
Finally, I decided to save the best for last. Ms. Deborah Johnson. She is sweet as pie and makes a good pie. From Mobile, Alabama, but California raised, she loves family and can talk to anyone. She raised one child and keeps her youth by staying “jazzy” as she says. O, yeah, she’s also my mother.
These women mentioned are just to name a few that stand out for me. I am so proud to be a woman as we have that “umph.” We are able to pick up the pieces and keep it moving no matter what.
Happy Women’s History Month divas and work it!
Smooches,
Professor Diva Cali
