Wigging Out

IMG_1528

It’s the last week of class and the countdown to finals is on.   Things are crazy on campus.  One of our students was killed in a car accident Thanksgiving weekend.   This week has been a mix of grief counseling,  completing the syllabi, reading final project drafts,  going to holiday events, conducting interviews with the faculty search committee, advising students on schedules for the spring semester and listening to the pleas of failing students.   All of this has left me no time to diva-fy my hair.

My chignon was falling apart and unraveled it looked like I was auditioning for a Dr. Miracle commercial.   A few days ago I accompanied my sister to a wig shop, for her to choose the latest addition to her extensive collection.  I tried on a few as a joke, and ending up falling for a highlighted lace front bob. I left the store wearing it!

Wigs aren’t just for grandma anymore.  Before going “natural” this season Tyra Banks wore lace front wigs frequently on her show.  Wendy Williams stores notes in her wigs.     Currently the most famous or infamous wig wearer is Kim Zolciak of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.”

Since this is my first time wigging it, I called on my friend Adrin Washington master stylist at Washington, DC’s Ted Gibson Salon and   LA’s Beauty Beat (http://labeautybeat.com/category/adrins-beat/ ) contributor for some advice.    Adrin said that wigs are a good way to try out new looks without committing to a new style.

ADRIN’S TIPS:

  • Maintain your hair underneath; Keep it clean, braid or wrap it, then cover it with a wig cap.
  • Store wig on a mannequin or wig block to maintain style and shape.
  • Lace front wigs look more natural; but do not use tape or glue to secure them. These products may cause breakage to your hair.
  • On average synthetic wigs will last for six months and human hair wigs up to a year.

Now, I’m covered until I go to the salon after class on Friday.

Air Kisses,

Professor Diva Mac

  1. Hey Professor Diva M

I’m a new wiggie too. I think I’m becoming addicted. My own hair is ok, but it is really easy to top things off if I’m in too big a hurry in the morning getting my daughter to school. Our local wig shop has some beauties for less than $30!!

When I wear mine blended with my hair around the hair line, or a different one with a headband I get tons of compliments! I am truly hooked!
