Dreaming of a P.I.N.K. Christmas
When I think of the color pink, the first thing that comes to mind is a baby girl or Race for the Cure. Pink tends to denote something fun, playful, calming, and anything “girly.”
Well this diva loves the color however P.I.N.K. has shaped a new meaning in my life. P.I.N.K., or Prostitution is Not Kool, is a registered non-profit organization that serves the needs of young girls who have unfortunately taken to this lifestyle.
I recently began serving on P.I.N.K.’s board and attended a holiday fundraiser at the executive director’s home. The vision and mission is simple: stop the sexual exploitation of children.
Executive Director, Masika George states, “our goal is to transition these young girls into a safe environment through mentoring, counseling, and intervention.” George is originally from the San Francisco Bay area who relocated to Atlanta a few years ago and started P.I.N.K.
Statistics indicate that at least 2/3 of prostitutes enter this lifestyle before the age of 16. Sadly, approximately 250,000 children are forced or coerced into prostitution every year with Georgia trafficking 200 to 300 girls every month.
As the African proverb states, “it takes a village to raise a child,” and we are obligated to lead our children on a positive path. We, as a society, are ALL responsible for our children.
